You should develop your peripheral vision. Most people have heard of such a thing and have some idea what peripheral vision is. Few have thought about developing it as a reading tool. Like almost anything that you can think of, your periperal vision can be improved and enhanced by deliberate practice at using it.
This is what you need to do. Fix your vision on a distance object. Do not move your eyes from the object while thinking about what you can see out of the corner of your eyes. You can see far to right and left. If you do this on a regular basis you can develop and improve you peripheral vision.
Your improved peripheral vision will aid you in seeing a wide piece of text at one glance. This is what you must do to become a "speed reader". This will not happen all at once. It is no problem to make yourself aware of your side vision and use it. It is not stressful or tiring. I drive down the highway and recite to myself what I see on each side of the road. It is actually kind of fun.
Your periperal vision can be improved with practice in using it. Practice!!
