This closeup shows one of the ways that I have used to allow the cable to move freely in the maple clip. If there is any bind in the cable you can not release the arrow smoothly. A smooth jerk free release is what it is all about.
The cable release end is kept in place by the small length of brass tubing. The tubing is held in place with a small pin (piece of copper wire) in a hole that has been drilled through the maple and the bit of tubing.
On another release that I use much of the time I have made a small square piece of thin aluminum to hold the cable end. There are many ways to do this. The thing to remember is that the end must not bind in any was. On the first release I built I wrapped tape around the end of the cable. It was ok but there was some binding.
The clip is made of maple. I choose maple because I knew that it has long been used for cutting boards. It is very close grained and has little or no taste. It does not seem to have space for germs to breed. I have put no finish on the surface and it does tend to get a bit dirty. If you go to the places where I go a little dirt can not bother you. It has been dropped in the dirt and grass many times. My dad told me that a little dirt was good for you. Maple could be wiped with alcohol each time it was used without damage if one wished.
